Film Production vs Video Production

At first glance, film production and video production may appear to be the same, but the truth is they could not be more different in terms of result and intent. For marketing purposes and accuracy, understanding the difference between these two fields of production is important, and hopefully, this brief comparison will prove to be enlightening.

FILM PRODUCTION

When you think of film productions, award-winning names come to mind, such as Steven Spielberg, Sofia Coppola, or the Coen brothers. These creations are usually crafted with the intention of telling a story, but not for a specific profit or gain. To put in simpler terms, a film production is a movie or short film that is created for cinematic purposes and utilizes cinematography.

INTENTION

Film producers want to tell a story in an invigorating, memorable way. They weave scenes and music and characters together in a way that plucks heartstrings and creates a story, be it long or short, that is usually intended to teach a lesson or share an experience. Its’ intention is for enjoyment.

PROCESS

Typically, film production is a much deeper, time-consuming task than video production. You are working with a full story arch, fleshed-out characters, lessons, plot twists, and surprise endings. While a film production is meant to inspire creativity, it’s far different from the process of a video production, but both do share similar aspects.

All productions will need to be crafted, usually with storyboards and drafts, and then edited and perfected. You can see most of the overlapping aspects between both career paths in the process that each one takes on.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

Video production, on the other hand, focuses on the appeal that moving pictures have on human nature and our desire for things we see. This is utilized to create an advertisement with rich visuals and has been proven to entirely change the way your brand is made accessible to your consumers.

Again, to put it in a simpler way, video production is the creation of short, specific, marketable clips and scenes that utilize videography.

INTENTION

Both production types aim to tell a story, but it’s the purpose of doing so that matters here. With video production, you are capturing shorter, more specific moving pictures that have specific goals and desired outcomes. The intent with this form of production is for marketing purposes, to spread exposure to a brand, and create an immersive story for clients to enjoy that will enrich the quality and desire for products and services offered by a business.

PROCESS

Marketing videos are often shorter than a film. The goal here is to create more of an atmosphere than a true storyline, and usually, the characters are unimportant. The focus throughout the process is to showcase a brand, its’ story, and the benefit it provides a consumer, so the process for video production reflects this.

As you make a video production, thinking of the impact it will have on clients for the company, not the ability it has to inspire others through storytelling and character interaction.
